FAQ: Volunteer coverage for retired physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic

TMLT now offers malpractice insurance coverage at no cost to retired Texas physicians who resume practicing medicine on a volunteer basis during the COVID-19 public health emergency.
This medical professional liability coverage will be offered without premium to any Texas physician working on a volunteer basis and in direct response to a governmentally declared emergency order regarding the COVID-19 crisis.

What is meant by “working on a volunteer basis?”
This means providing professional medical services without financial compensation, including fees or salary. This specific TMLT policy is offered only to retired physicians who wish to provide professional medical services on a volunteer basis during the COVID-19 pandemic. When the Texas emergency declaration is suspended or lifted, this coverage will no longer be active.
I have never been a TMLT policyholder. Do I still qualify?
Yes. This volunteer coverage is available to any retired physician in Texas who wishes to join the fight against COVID-19.
Do I need to be a member of the Texas Medical Association (TMA)?
No. TMA membership is not required.
What is the premium charge?
There is no premium charge. This policy is offered at no cost.
Are trial costs related to any possible claims covered?
Yes. If a claim is filed against you, defense costs are paid in addition to the limits of liability.
Does this policy include all of the features of a standard TMLT policy?
No. This policy does not include many of the coverage features found in a typical TMLT policy. This policy does not include regulatory defense, cyber liability, employment practices liability, premises liability, or medical director coverage.
