TMB finalizes new CME requirements

Texas physicians must now meet two new CME requirements to renew their licenses on or after September 1, 2020, according to the Texas Medical Board.

Physicians are now required to take two hours of CME in pain management and the prescription of opioids and other controlled substances. In addition, physicians must complete a course on human trafficking prevention approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

Both CME requirements will be part of the 48 credits of CME every 24 months (24 month timeline relates to the biennial registration period, not the calendar year). At least half of these hours must be in formal, category I or 1A courses.

At least 2 of the 24 formal hours must involve the study of medical ethics and/or professional responsibility.
