On November 1, 2013, Texas Senate Bill 406 (SB 406) went into effect. This law governs the delegation of prescriptive authority to advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs) in Texas. Physicians who delegate prescriptive authority must have an agreement in place.
A comparison chart created by the Coalition for Nurses in Advance Practice outlines the general differences between the current law and delegated prescriptive authority as it will exist under S.B. 406. The chart outlines the differences in the definitions for practice sites, differences in physician supervision and quality assurance requirements, and describes the elements that must be included in the written documents required for delegated prescriptive authority before and after November 1, 2013.
